Also a 1/2 inch tear at the top of the front of the dust jacket, with some creasing of the dustcover at the top of the spine. No markings or highlighting found during a cursory review of the text. A superbly illustrated volume that is hard to find in North America. Text is all in French, with many illustrations. An illustrated history of scientific instruments, with lavish illustrations. Book is divided into sections, such as measurement, timekeeping, topography, astronomy, physical measurement and so on. The pictures are of exquisitely made instruments of early science. There are barometers, thermometers, astrolabes, armillary spheres, hourglasses, sundials, telescopes, even an early pedometer. They are all works of art, some intricately made with clockwork interiors and either gold or gold-plated to give them a richness and artistry seldom seen in contemporary science. This is a stimulating and informative book, even if you do not know French, which the essays that accompany the different sections are written in. There are devices depicted in this book that help to trace the path of science through history.
