This is just one in a series of 'Lost Cities' books that he wrote during his travels. He traveled to out-of-the-way places in Northern Pakistan, the deserts of China, and places now forbidden and truly lost: he went to see the now-destroyed Buddhas of Bamyan in the hinterlands of Afghanistan, the wilds of Iran, and distant parts of Western and Southern China as it first opened to outside tourists. He speculates on the many mysteries, stone structures, megaliths and ruins that he encounters in his sometimes hair-raising journeys.
