1 Proceedings of a symposium on unity and conflict in the Warsaw Pact: Stockholm, November 18-19, 1982 (FOA symposium)
Swedish National Defence Research Institute 9170560684 / 9789170560682 PAPERBACK Good
9170560684 Hard to find copy of this symposium held in 1982, 158 pages, trade paperback, The Swedish National Defence Research Institute, edited by Ingmar Oldberg. Condition is good, some light wear to the covers, small owner name written on upper right of cover in pen. Usually ships with delivery confirmation. Where available a photo of the cover has been provided. Title: FOA Symposium: Unity and Conflict in the Warsaw Pact. Symposium held in Stockholm, November 18-19, 1982. Summary: Interesting timing, the book indicates some of the forces then at work that would be the determining factor in the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact. Leonid Brezhnev had died barely a week before the seminar began and the introduction mentions the installation of Yuri Andropov as a critical change in the days following Brezhnev's death. An interesting snapshot of some of the critical features of what was to come by the participants, and because the book was not actually published until '84, some additional observations by the editor on the subsequent year of change including the death of Andropov in '84. Contents: Introduction (Ingmar Oldberg) / Session 1: THE CULTURAL DIMENSION The Problem of National Identity in Eastern Europe (Richard Swartz) / Session II: THE POLITICAL DIMENSION From Stalin's Empire to Pax Sovietica? Problems of Soviet Power in Eastern Europe (Kristian Gerner) / Session III: THE ECONOMIC DIMENSION Economic Relations between the CMEA States and the Influence of Trade with the West (Peter Knirsch) / Session IV: THE MILITARY DIMENSION The USSR,the Warsaw Pact and NATO (Christopher D. Jones) / Session V: THE FUTURE OF THE WARSAW PACT A Summary of the Taljoviken Round Table (Ingmar Oldberg) Related Publications from the Swedish National Defence Research Institute (Bibliography of materials). Suitable for historians of the Cold War, reference librarians, researchers, and collectors. Additional condition notes: The book is no longer in pristine condition, showing some slight wear and creasing to the covers and some chipping of the ink along the spine, but this is nevertheless a rare copy. *

2 The Diary of Che Guevara: Bolivia: The Secret Papers of a Revolutionary [November 7, 1966 - October 7, 1967]
Bantam Books B002QXEAGO PAPERBACK Good
B002QXEAGO Mass market paperback, 191 pages, Bantam Books by arrangement with Ramparts, dated July 1968, a presumed first paperback edition (we had sold the clearly-marked second edition earlier), this was the sensational publishing coup of that year. Book shows some minor paperback book wear, and with the covers showing typical handling wear and a diagonal crease in the upper right of the front cover. Spine shows a little wrinkling, probably from careless binding, but otherwise the book may have been mostly unread, only some underlines in blue ball point pen in Castro's introduction on page 11. The pages are yellowed from the pulp stock used during the rush to get this book to retailers before other competitors obtained their own versions. An authentic piece of 60's memorabilia which sold out its' first edition quickly and became an icon of 60s journalism despite the rather turgid quotidian details of Guevara's struggles in the Bolivian jungle. *

3 B. Granville (Lt.-Col.) Baker From a Terrace in Prague
New York, NY Brentano's No Date(about 1920). B002DFM12K Hardcover Good
B002DFM12K Hardcover, no dust jacket, dark green cloth boards, no date noted, but sources point to 1920 or so, there are 2 hand-written gift dedications, the earliest is as a Christmas gift in 1924. Main flaw is a slight crack in the binding revealing the crash (cloth web on spine) of the book between pages 32 and 33. Otherwise the book is in fine shape, appears to be little used. The endpapers have some pencil bookseller's marks, the right endpaper / first page has a private library stamp in the form of a blue oval with the names of the two former owners. Two gift dedications are found above and below the stamp from the owners to a Christmas gift recipient in 1924 and intriguingly a second inscription below the stamp back to the presumed former owners from a second gift giver in September of 1938. There are three color prints of the Prague skyline / buildings and a number of black and white line drawings of places and people of interest done skilfully by the author in a style reminiscent of Art Noveau. From the preface: There are many excuses for the writing of books, and sometimes there may even be sufficient reason. I offer no excuses, but will give what reasons I have for committing to paper these my reflections or meditations inspired by the sight of a fine old capital city as seen from a Terrace in Prague. The first reason I wish to give may be altruistic, namely, that finding so many of my race quite ignorant of Prague and all that city stands for right down the ages, I feel compelled to add my mite to what has already been written about the subject. My second reason, a strong one with me, arises out of my inability to enjoy things of beauty and interest without letting my friends know about them. This may be a weak and selfish reason, but there it is. The third reason rests on my intense desire that you should come out here, to Prague, even to the terrace of my choice, and look at the scene through my eyes while I would endeavour to see it through yours. This, I admit, is undiluted selfishness on my part. While awaiting you, I am preparing, by means of this work, to introduce you to a goodly throng of those who know or knew this city and loved it well. Perhaps they may admit me to their round table as the last to arrive, and the least. In any case, I owe them a debt of gratitude for their help in becoming acquainted with Prague and the deeper meaning of this glorious city. There are many such kindly helpers: there was Cosmas Pragensis the chronicler, Palacky the historian, there was Count Lutzow, whose works on Prague, as on his native country, are inspired by intense love of them, and illumined by transparent[Pg 8] honesty. There are others still among us and doing useful work. A walk with Dr. Jerabek in the gardens of Waldstein's palace, a talk with Professor Skola, and many other good friends of mine in Prague, have made a pleasure of this work I have undertaken. Out of sheer joy in the things I have seen and heard, and the kindly spirit that informed those who helped me, have I written and illustrated this book From a Terrace in Prague. *

4 Ben Kiernan THE POL POT REGIME Race, Power, and Genocide in Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge, 1975-79
Silkworm 9747100436 / 9789747100433 PAPERBACK Very Good
9747100436 Trade paperback, 477 pages, publishers, 1996 copyright, ISBN: 9747100436. Title: The Pol Pot Regime Race, Power, and Genocide in Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge, 1975-1979 author: Ben Kiernan . Usually ships with delivery confirmation. Where available, a photo of the actual cover has been provided instead of a stock photo. Condition description: Light scuffing to covers, otherwise almost new. Comprehensive review of life in the ultimate totalitarian state, both disturbing and insightful. From the back of the book: The Khmer Rouge revolution turned Cambodia into grisly killing fields, as the Pol Pot regime murdered or starved to death a million and a half of Cambodia's eight million inhabitants. This book - the first comprehensive study of the Pol Pot regime - describes the violent origins, social context, and course of the revolution, providing a new answer to the question of why a group of Cambodian intellectuals imposed genocide on their own country. Ben Kiernan draws on more than five hundred Interviews with Cambodian refugees, survivors, and defectors, as well as on a rich collection of previously unexplored archival material from the Pol Pot regime (including Pol Pot's secret speeches). He recounts how in the first few days after Cambodia became Democratic Kampuchea in 1975, authorities evacuated all elites, closed hospitals, schools, monasteries, and factories, and abolished the use of money. For nearly four years, the country was a prison-camp state, the countryside was 'cleansed' of minorities and a savage war was fought against Vietnam. Exploring the nature of the regime that enforced such a revolution, Kiernan shows that its atrocities - the widespread massacres, forced assimilation of minorities, and foreign alliances and wars - can be explained by its ideological preoccupation with racist and totalitarian policies. Kiernan concludes with a description of the resistance movements that sprang up and the destruction of the regime by Vietnamese forces in 1979. *

5 Brian Terence. White German Tanks and Armored Vehicles, 1914-1945
Arco Pub 0668017848 / 9780668017848 PAPERBACK Good
0668017848 Trade paperback, (oblong format 8 1/2 inches wide x 5 1/2 inches high), 110 pages, Arco Publishing Company publishers, 1968 copyright, title: German Tanks and Armored Vehicles, 1914-1945, author: B. T. White. Usually ships with delivery confirmation. Where available, a photo of the actual cover has been provided instead of a stock photo. Condition description: some light wear along the edges, otherwise the book is in excellent shape. Illustrated with black and white photos, also diagrams. From the introduction: The armoured vehicles of the period from the Armistice up to the beginning of German re-armament, including those built in secret, are described in as much detail as is now obtainable, and illustrated where suitable pictures are available. All the main types of German tanks and armoured cars to enter quantity production from 1933 onwards are described and illustrated, although space permits no more than mention of the numerous sub-types of, for instance, PzKpfw III and PzKpfw IV. The two main types of armoured semi-tracked vehicles used in World War II were built in many versions for a wide variety of functions, but again lack of space allows only general descriptions of the basic vehicles, lists of the variants, and illustrations of typical vehicles.

6 Carl Molesworth Sharks over China: The 23rd Fighter Group in World War II
Brassey's Inc. B000QRV05Q Hardcover Fair
B000QRV05Q The main reason for the 'acceptable' rating is that this is an ex-library copy with usual stickers on spine, a library bar-code on the first page and back cover, circulation form has been torn away leaving a rough patch, the bar-codes have been crossed through with magic marker, it has also has a mylar cover. Hardcover with mylar library cover over the dust jacket, 325 pages, Brassey's publishers, 1994 copyright, ISBN: 0028810945. Title: Sharks Over China: The 23rd Fighter Group In World War II, author: Carl Molesworth . Usually ships with delivery confirmation. Where available, a photo of the actual cover has been provided instead of a stock photo. Condition description: . From the dust jacket: The shark-faced P-40 fighter planes that patrolled the deadly skies over China during World War II hold a special fascination for avia?tion and military history enthusiasts. Yet even now, more than fifty years later, little is known about the employment of those extraordinary machines, the courageous men who flew them, and the very different kind of war they fought. And much of what people think they know is wrong. Sharks Over China sets the record straight. It is the first history of the U.S. Army Air Corps unit that incorporated Gen. Claire Chennault's famous Flying Tigers - the 23rd Fighter Group. During the dark days immediately after Pearl Harbor, most news from the Asian front was bad - with the exception of reports about the Flying Tigers and their successor, the 23rd. Day after day, the P-40s of this legendary unit out-fought the powerful Japanese air forces despite acute shortages of men and materiel. No single American fighter group in World War II performed more varied missions, was more successful, or was more central to the war effort in its theater of operations.

7 D. O. Henley An account of the operations of the 12th British Infantry Brigade in Italy March - November 1944
B004IATUA4 Hardcover Good
B004IATUA4 Hardcover, no dust jacket, dark blue cloth boards, 239 pages, publishers not stated, just 'Athens 1945', copyright 1945. Title: An account of the operations of the 12th British Infantry Brigade In Italy: March - November 1944, author D. O. Henry . Includes 13 fold out 'sketch maps' which are illustrations in (originally) pen and ink in several colors of the battle conditions and strategies. The binding and paper are not of the best quality, the covers show some wear, a crescent of a wet drink mars the front cover, the gilding of the title has worn away, the spine shows some notable wear of the color which has worn away from the cloth. The endpapers show some wrinkling, perhaps from not being carefully pasted down originally. The text is in much better shape, a few pages and one of the maps show some creasing from not being properly closed. Chapter titles: The Garigliano / San Elia Fiumerapido / Cassino / The Great Offensive / Moricone / Advance To San Pancrazio / Advance To Florence / The Adriatic: Coriano / Cesena / Forli. Usually ships with delivery confirmation. Where available, a photo of the actual cover has been provided instead of a stock photo. Condition description: . From the introduction: The following account of the operations of one of the British infantry brigades which fought in the Italian campaign was written only that the surviving members of that Brigade could have a general record to which their more personal memories might be related* The history was written from the stand - point of one officer of the Brigade Headquarters and based upon the material which came to hand in the normal course of everyday duties. The more intimate (and sometimes trivial) details are naturally concerned more with the officers and men of the Headquarters than with those of the battalions, but neither this nor any other account can hope to give proper recognition to the conduct of the individual infantry soldier in action, or even to mention the majority of those acts of bravery which sometimes lead to citations for awards but more often remain unknown to any but a few members of a platoon or Company. Mention of individuals is made at all only to reduce the impersonality of the account and because the impossibility of giving due emphasis in this respect will be taken for granted.

A collection of accounts of 'The Barbarians', the scourge of civilization across a broad historical period, starting with Herodotus and the Scythians, then Romes 'Gauls', the Goths, the Huns, the Vandals, the Vikings, Genghis Khan, Mongols, Tartars, Tamarland, 'The Infidels' (both sides of the Crusades). 10 Dr. Frank E. Vandiver Ph.D. Blood Brothers: A Short History of the Civil War (Williams-Ford Texas A&M University Military History Series)
Texas A&M University Press 0890965242 / 9780890965245 PAPERBACK Fair
0890965242 Ex-library copy. Trade paperback, 210 pages, Texas A and M University Press publishers, 2nd printing 1993, ISBN: 0890965242, ASIN: B002L4O8JM. Title: Blood Brothers: A Short History of the Civil War author: Frank E. Vandiver. Usually ships with delivery confirmation. Where available, a photo of the actual cover has been provided instead of a stock photo. Condition description: ex-library copy with bar-codes that have been crossed thru with magic marker are main reason for 'acceptable' condition, some plastic laminated covers over the original paper covers make this sturdy, some moderate use noted to this copy. From the back of the book: Brothers by blood before the war; brothers in blood after. The blood mingled in the Civil War became the symbol and perverse source of indissoluble union between two sections, two ways of life, two visions of the future, and even two revolutions. In riveting detail yet with broad sweep, veteran Civil War historian Frank E. Vandiver recounts the campaigns and major battles of the first war of the Industrial Revolution, with its machinery, firepower, and engineering beyond imagination. With provocative insight, he traces a picture of the war as rooted in the character and vision of its two leaders and their two sectional revolutions, brought about by the centralizing and industrializing demands of the war itself.

11 Edited By Romney Sedgwick. Lord Hervey"s Memoirs. Edited From a Copy of the Original Manuscript in the Roayl Archives at Windsor Castle.
William Kimber B001LMXAXA Hardcover Good
B001LMXAXA Hardcover, no dust jacket, 1952, (First Edition, stated), no dust jacket - William Kimber and Co. publishers, 370 pages, ASIN: B001LMXAXA, title: Lord Hervey's Memoirs: Edited from a copy of the original manuscript by the Royal Archives at Windsor Castle. Edited by Rodney Sedgwick. Usually ships with delivery confirmation. Where available a picture of the book has been provided. Book shows some moderate wear, the ink title on the spine has worn away, making the letters almost invisible, the blank page across from the introduction has a blue ink smear a couple of inches long, there is a slight musty smell to the book (it was recently imported from London) for those who are scent-sensitive. These are insightful memoirs of the royal court of England in the 1700s, really insider gossip in the still-evolving 'memoir' format, where the author would quickly jot down his memories of conversations of the Royals. From the introduction: Disengaged of dead matter, the main theme of the Memoirs emerges as one of those quarrels between reigning monarchs and heirs-apparent which played so important a part in eighteenth century politics. The scene is the Court; and the principal actors are George II, Queen Caroline, their children and Sir Robert Walpole. None of these personages requires much introduction but for the convenience of readers some short biographical notes are appended. A little more, however, is required in the case of the enigmatic figure of the narrator. *

12 Edward B Atkeson A military assessment of the Middle East, 1991-96
Strategic Studies Institute, U.S. Army War College B0006F2A0W Good
B0006F2A0W Trade paperback, 117 pages, Strategic Studies Institute publishers, 1992 print date, ASIN: B0006F2A0W. Title: A Military Assessment of the Middle East, 1991-96, author: Edward B. Atkeson. Usually ships with delivery confirmation. Where available, a photo of the actual cover has been provided instead of a stock photo. Condition description: typical used book wear, the covers show some handling wear, there are some half-moons, and some mild creasing, the edges of the spine show a little wear where the red ink has worn off in tiny chips, the back of the book is in similar shape the bright red cover has been scraped here and there showing a little white underneath. Advice on what to do and not to do in the Middle East. Probably as relevant in 2011 as it was in publication. From the foreword: This study was undertaken to assess the military balance of power in the Middle East in the wake of the Gulf War of 1991 and to explore techniques for incorporating dynamic factors in such analyses. In order to focus the effort on issues most relevant to current U.S. security interests, the geographic scope was limited to the areas of principal Arab-Israeli confrontation and the Persian Gulf. The Middle East military balance has long been the focus of considerable concern among international security specialists, particularly over the last two decades as sophisticated weapons have proliferated dramatically throughout the region. In the wake of the Persian Gulf War, a principal U.S. security objective has once again become preserving a stable military balance in the region. Most reports on military balances present a static net assessment of the major military equipment holdings of various countries in the region examined. The objective of the following study is to create an understanding of the military balance and trends in the Middle East that will influence security issues several years into the future through the inclusion of intangible factors not often considered in the analysis of regional military balances. *

William Morrow B000J0R9UU Hardcover Good
B000J0R9UU Hardcover, with dust jacket, William Morrow and Company publishers, 1973 copyright, 528 pages, printed in Great Britain. Book shows typical wear for used book, dust covers have some wear tear creasing and small scrapes, edges and inside of dust jacket are yellowed, price is crossed out and rewritten in ball-point on endpaper, binding is tight, bottom half-inch of book cover is bleached from either heat or insect damage, looks a little mottled along the top and bottom edges, a few small spots along the bottom outside margin, but this is a fully serviceable copy. Usually ships with delivery confirmation. From the back of the book: During World War II, under extremely difficult and dangerous circumstances, intelligence agents and saboteurs carried out assignments so daring and so audacious that stories about them continue to challenge the imaginations of ordinary men and women. Now, for the first time, twenty-seven of the most famous undercover exploits have been completely researched and documented and presented in a single book. Janusz Piekalkiewicz traveled nearly 200,000 miles over a period of five years to interview survivors of these missions - even bringing former enemies together at the original scenes. Where no survivors existed, he drew from previously unreleased documents. In addition to much new evidence, archives yielded many of the photographs - selected from more than one million - that appear for the first time in this book. Totally engrossing and more exciting than any spy novel, Secret Agents, Spies, and Saboteurs reveals, in a compelling documentary style, a true story of unequaled human ingenuity and courage. *

Of these, nineteen were hanged, and one old man who refused to enter a plea at his trial was pressed to death as the sheriff and his men piled weights on him to force him to do so. When the hysteria at last abated, approximately 150 persons were in the various jails in Massachusetts, some of whom had already been sentenced to death, while others were still waiting to be tried. By order of the governor in May of 1693, these people were released when their jail and court costs were paid. At least three women died as a result of the overcrowded and unhealthy conditions to which they were subjected in prison, while the number of those who died at a later time or who suffered mental or emotional breakdowns as a result of their ordeals will probably never be known. Judging by the fact that numbered among the prisoners were a four-year-old girl, several pregnant women, and a large number of elderly people, this last might reasonably be expected to be high. Although this is admittedly one of the more degrading pages in our history, we cannot pass judgment on those who were involved until we examine both the times in which they lived and the stresses to which they were subjected.

19 Leonard J. Arrington Great Basin Kingdom - Latter- Day Saints
University of Nebraska Press. B000GSJADO PAPERBACK Good
B000GSJADO Trade paperback, number line indicates this is the 5th printing of the paperback edition, copyright page has 1966 date, 534 pages, author Leonard Arrington, title: Great Basin Kingdom: Economic History of the Latter-Day Saints 1830-1900. ASIN: B000GSJADO. Usually ships with delivery confirmation. Book shows some moderate wear, corners of covers are creased, general creasing along edges of front cover, spine shows vertical creasing from repeated opening and closing, slight soiling to covers from handling and use. Some genealogical notes about three of the personages are written in pen on the first few pages, apparently the former owners were related to three of the pioneering families mentioned in the book, and there is even a hand-drawn chart of the descendants drawn on the blank page across from the title page depicting the ancestral relationship. Good working copy, probably not suitable because of the markings for a gift. From the back of the book: The dream of building a true kingdom of God was foremost in the minds of many of those who first settled oh this continent, and a dominating force in early American pioneering ventures. Thus the dream of the Mormons, often regarded as peculiar in our history, was really only a part of a larger dream, and their experiment in group economics, their trials and errors and successes, can really be looked upon as a more explicit formulation of the total American experience. The economic aspect of Mormon life is one of the most interesting and significant of all, and a close study of it, which Great Basin Kingdom gives for the first time, opens up whole new areas of meaning. A thorough description of the problems, policies, and institutions of the Mormons not only develops into a fast-moving, dramatic story of dedication and deeds, but becomes in a larger sense an important case study in economic history, economic policy, and die economics ; of religion in the American Far West. For economists and social scientists this book offers an intensive study of the development of an 'underdeveloped' American economy; for historians an exploration of one of the most neglected phases of American and Western history; for students of religion a comprehensive treatment of one of the few native American religious movements; for members of the Mormon Church a detailed and sympathetic treatment of many, little-known phases of their own history; and, finally, for anyone who likes to read, an exciting story from our past of religious dedication and economic wisdom working together to achieve remarkable results. *
