1 Charles E. Larmore Patterns of Moral Complexity
Cambridge University Press 0521338913 / 9780521338912 PAPERBACK Good
0521338913 Trade paperback, 1992 reprint with dark cover on top, shading to yellow at the bottom, 193 pages, Cambridge University Press publishers. Book shows typical wear for used book, front cover has some creasing and small scrapes, a few margin notes in red ink and more numerous underlines in black ink through the first half of the book, binding is tight, if it was not for the underlines the book would be very good condition. Usually ships with delivery confirmation. From the back of the book: In this book Charles Larmore aims to recover three fundamental and pervasive forms of moral complexity that have too often been neglected by moral and political philosophers. In the first place he argues that virtue is not, as both Kantian and utilitarian theories portray it, simply the conscientious adherence to principle. Rather, as Aristotle pointed out, the exercise of virtue requires the use of judgment, or phronesis, to establish when and how the rules associated with a virtue apply. However, Larmore does not endorse the views of those neo-Aristotelian critics of liberalism (from the German Idealists on) who have sought to restore the holism of the polis. He argues - and this is the second pattern of complexity - that recognizing the value of constitutive ties with shared forms of life does not undermine the liberal ideal of political neutrality toward differing ideals of the good life. This is because moral considerations that may be decisive within the political realm need not have the same priority in other areas of social life, and liberalism is best considered a political doctrine, not a philosophy of man. Finally Larmore argues for what he calls the heterogeneity of morality. Moral thinking need not in the end be exclusively deontological or consequentialist, or in any way monolithic, and we should recognize that the ultimate sources of moral value are diverse. The arguments presented here do not attack the possibility of moral theory. But in addressing some of the central issues of moral and political thinking today they attempt to restore to that thinking greater flexibility and a necessary sensitivity to our common experience. *

3 Gerald Kaufman Meet Me in St. Louis (BFI Film Classics)
British Film Institute 0851705014 / 9780851705019 PAPERBACK Fair
0851705014 Marked as acceptable because this is an ex-library copy, rebound by library as a hardcover with plastic laminated cover. The lamination has come loose around the spine, making the surface adjacent to the spine look a little bubbly and uneven where the book has been opened and closed. Has the usual stamps, markings, and bar codes, some of the bar codes have been marked with a magic marker, 72 pages, BFI (British Film Institute) publishers, 1994 copyright, ISBN: 0851705014. Title: Meet Me In St. Louis, author: Gerald Kaufman. Usually ships with delivery confirmation. Where available, a photo of the actual cover has been provided instead of a stock photo. Condition description: usual library markings already noted, flaws in the spine where the plastic cover has separated somewhat from the hardcover library custom binding, on the other hand this copy is durable and will withstand years of use in the future. Author spent time in looking at library archives of the studios to derive some very interesting material about the making of this iconic film - apparently the actual making of the film was nowhere as rosy as the subject matter of the film itself. The book provides an interesting counterweight and depicts the artistic struggle that went into it, from disputes from the Hayes code about language and moral issues, to the extended absences of Judy Garland and Margaret O'Brien. Some interesting insights in what it took to make the young actor Margaret O'Brien to cry on cue, that definitely would not be approved of today.
