G. J. Hahn; Jr. W. D. Meeker Pitfalls and Practical Considerations in Product Life Analysis General Electric Corporate Research and Development B003XCJ9RW PAPERBACK Good B003XCJ9RW Paperback booklet, stapled binding, 24 pages, CRD / Corporate Research and Development, General Electric publishers, Technical Information Series 1, October 1980, Number 80CRD223. Book shows typical wear for moderately used book, covers have mild creasing near the binding. Usually ships with delivery confirmation. From the abstract: Important decisions are frequently made from the analysis of product life data. Sometimes, the data are obtained from a carefully planned experiment using the manufacturer's life test racks. More frequently, field test results are used, Various graphical and analytical methods such as fitting a Weibull distribution to the data, have been developed to allow analysts to obtain desired information. Simple models, such as the Weibull distribution, may, however, be inappropriate when (1) one is dealing with a population mixture, (2) there are multiple failure models, (3) some units are immune to failure from certain modes, or (4) there are startup failures. Use of a too simple model can lead to incorrect conclusions, especially when estimates beyond the data range are desired. This paper reviews the major purposes of product life analyses, shows how these differ from other common statistical analyses, and describes popular methods of analysis and some common pitfalls. These pitfalls are illustrated by detailed examples dealing with the analysis of human mortality data, electromechanical device data, and generated life data from two production periods. More general models for product life analysis and their use and various remedial measures are suggested. The emphasis is on recognizing the pitfalls and minimizing their potential adverse consequences in a practical situation, if possible.

George E. P. Box; J. S. Hunter Evolutionary Operation & Some Statistical Principles Underlying Evolutionary Operation The Chemstrand Corporation B002G90SDC PLASTIC COMB Very Good B002G90SDC Comb / Spiral plastic bound seminar book, approximately 88 pages with 10 pages of worksheets in the back. Title on cover reads: Comprehensive Personnel Development Program. The bulk of the book consists of two papers: 1) Evolutionary Operation: A Method for Increasing Industrial Productivity by G. E. P. Box and 2) Some Statistical Principles Underlying Evolutionary Operation by J. S. Hunter. This appears to be a book used as a hand-out and workbook for a seminar held in Pensacola, Florida on June 24-25 in 1958 by the Chemstrand Corporation. Chemstrand's specialties in plastics might be a logical connection with the theories presented in the paper and the research that Box did on maximizing yields and scaling up from test to production runs in industrial processes earlier in his career in England at Imperial Chemical Industries. The paper covers improving yields in industrial operations using statistical application of abstract theory to the reality of multi-variable processes. This is a very early edition of works that would become later known in the field as EVOP or Evolutionary Operations within the Quality Control movement. The cover is a textured brown paper with a small plastic window cut in the cover , with the owner's name written and visible just above the title of the seminar. There is a two day schedule in yellow indicating the activities and speakers (Box and Hunter) during the two days. The papers are mimeographed in black, with a plastic binding, and some simple black lined diagrams. The condition of the book is very good, with some slight yellowing of the edges and some occasional notes written in pencil. This book appears to be rare and should be of interest to historians, librarians and others who work in the fields of quality control and statistics to review the early stages in the evolution of thought of this seminal part of the field. This is not the later Wiley Interscience book with a similar title by G. E. P. Box and N. R. Draper. The paper refers to Box's position at that time: Director, Statistical Techniques Group, Princeton University. He is acknowledged as one of the leading statisticians of the 20th Century.
