Henry D. Thoreau A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers (Limited Edition, Slipcased) West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company B001I9304U Hardcover Very Good B001I9304U 1966, 263 pages, Westvaco publishers, in this edition still using the name West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company, hardback, stated limited edition for Christmas 1966, presumably for their customers. Slipcase for book has some darkening on the top, blotching from extended wear or light. The edges of the rest of the slipcase are yellowed with shelfwear at the bottom. The book itself appears to be in excellent shape. There is an ex-libris sticker on the inside of the front cover, the rest of the book appears unmarked. A beautiful book, just illustrations from engravings of the period, on both the slipcase and the covers. The foreword and the back of the book indicates that the designer of the book was the noted Bradbury Thompson, the foreword itself was written by Jean A. Bradnick. The typography, binding, and layout, and of course the paper of the book reek with simplicity and sophistication. The book itself is quite collectible for its straight-forward presentation, except for the slightly yellowed and worn slipcase. A book by printing and publishing professionals with great pride, for those in the graphics profession who had great appreciation for such work.

Malcom Muir, President Newsweek Magazine, November 15, 1943 Vol XXII, No. 20 Newsweek MAGAZINE Fair Ex library copy, staples replaced with a string binding and spine reinforced with brown tape. Usual markings stamps and other library identifiers, circulation slip stamped 7 times in 43 and 44 and then left in the stacks until the 1980s when it was purchased at a public sale. Some water damage on the lower margin of many pages near the spine. Pages yellowed, covers chipped and worn, especially around edges. Plenty of ads for liquor, and most ads have a war-time theme showing pictures of tanks and large guns. A couple of wheels made in the caricatures of Hitler and "Tojo" labeled "Axis" in between are of historic interest. Page 29 has a small tear on the black and whiter photo of 17-year old Princess Elizabeth, who soon would be Queen along with her parents (The King and Queen). A short article with a photo of Lou Costello and his return to radio after a health scare that sent him to his own Palm Springs sanitarium. A full page ad for Farnsworth Television heralds the promising future technology after the world returns to peace and manufacturing shifts back to the consumer economy. A review of a book by Henry Canby on Walt Whitman spends time reviewing his "much discussed sexuality". A fascinating slice of life from a tumultuous time is on the front page as horse-mounted Russian Cossacks rush up a sandy slope armed with machine guns and steel helmets ride forth, presumably to do battle with the invading Germans. Rare copy. Ships with delivery confirmation via First Class or Priority Mail.
